PROGRAMME OUTLINE

The Development Volunteer programme has 3 periods:

3 months

Studies and practical preparations at College for International Co-operation and Development (CICD) in England. Your preparations are both theoretical and practical – with studies about global affairs, the history and economic development of Africa and Europe, your destination country… and more. You learn by group studies and workshops as well as practical actions, garden farming and organisational training.

6 months

Volunteer work at a community driven development project in Malawi, Mozambique or Zambia. These projects are run by our partner Humana People to People and have had a significant impact on health, education and environmental issues during more than 25 years of development work.
Here you will join a range of activities such as working with local farmers to increase food production, starting sustainable and income generating projects, training teachers and supporting ongoing pre-schools.

1 month

Now it’s time to conclude and reflect on your experiences, and consider your next step. Together with your team, you will also use this period to create materials such as a radio broadcast, articles for newspapers or blogs, a podcast, a video or other products in order to share your experiences and knowledge with the public.

ANOTHER KIND OF SCHOOL

Community Learning

Learn to live sustainably and fight poverty, as part of a like-minded community. Studies, work-shops and investigations about areas like eco-literacy, colonialism and Africa’s history, the gap between the Global North and the Global South, economy and globalisation, practical skills training such as organic farming…and much more.

Sustainability Training

CICD is a community of practice when it comes to sustainable living. In our walled garden we produce a lot of the vegetables that we eat. You will get hands-on training in organic farming and experience in how to cook plant-based food.

Volunteer for development

Together with 2 team mates, you join forces with people at one of Humana People to People’s development projects in Malawi, Zambia or Mozambique. You support in areas such as education of children or adults, farming and environmental protection, water projects and health campaigns.

TESTIMONIALS

“Besides the studies, what really made a big impact on me was the practical skills that I have learned during my time at CICD. These skills also helped me become more self-reliant person.
We were providing access to fresh drinking water to thousands of people and doing community mobilisation, I have done many things I never expected to do”

Danail Petrov, Bulgaria

“I did the Climate Activist programme. I studied different environmental topics that included lectures, articles, documentaries, an investigation, and practical actions in the garden. For example, we prepared the permaculture beds in the greenhouse, a pedagogical way to practice and “learn by doing” about sustainable alternatives. Also, we prepared an investigation trip around Scotland, an amazing opportunity to learn about renewable energy sources by travelling”

Margarita Barbero, Spain

“When studying at CICD I had the opportunity to develop personal and professional skills in so many ways. The concept of living in a community was a relevant part for my preparation to the project and to the world – everyone counts on everyone and I learned how to deal with difficulties that can arise at any time as a group and as an individual”

Carina Andrade, Portugal
